GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FURTHER WELFARE REFORM PROPOSALS; HAVE YOUR SAY22/07/2008Social Firms will all have an interest in the latest proposals from Department for Work and Pensions set out in its consultation document, "No one written off: reforming welfare to reward responsibility", published on Monday 21 July 2008. The Government has outlined its plans to deliver greater and more personalised support for people in return for more responsibility. The majority of people of working age – who can work now or at some point in the future – will no longer be on benefits for life. Most people on benefits will be required to contribute actively in return for their benefits. There are also plans for more personalised support provided for everyone who needs it to ensure they have the opportunity to get into and remain in work. Access to Work funding is to be increased and the Government wants to test how disabled people can make greater use of individualised budgets for support. There are also proposals for employment service providers to have a “right to bid” to deliver innovative services. The consultation runs until 22 October 2008. Social Firms UK will be consulting members so that we can develop a response on your behalf. In the meantime, full details of the proposals are available on the Welfare reform webpages or you can email the Consultation team. The Green Paper is available in a range of formats, including easy read, large print (from 25 July), and braille and audio (from 30 July). Please don’t hesitate to let Social Firms UK Policy Officer, Di Cunliffe, have your views by email or give her a ring on 01737 763750. |
