Social Firm is the first Mark holder in Norfolk

Graphic Design and Print are celebrating becoming the first business in Norfolk to be awarded the prestigious Social Enterprise Mark.

Graphic Design and Print CIC, based in rural North Norfolk, was set up over two years ago as a Social Firm to provide training and employment for disadvantaged local people, but at the same time provide a quality and professional design and print service to customers.  Director of Graphic Design and Print CIC Stephen Mollison said  “We hope holding the Social Enterprise Mark will identify us as a business that really cares about how it operates and that customers from across the UK will buy from us, confident that we have a proven social benefit”.  He also thanked Social Enterprise East of England for their support and bursary for their Mark application.

Ministry of Justice Funding Opps

The MoJ's National Offender Management Service (NOMS) has announced two new funding opportunities (each totalling £200k) for social enterprises in England to develop creative approaches to service delivery.

The European Social Firms of the Year Awards, which took place during the Social Firms UK and Social Firms Europe CEFEC annual conference, celebrated some of the fantastic work taking place across Europe was showcased and celebrated in style.  Those winners in full:-

 

MillRace IT among partners awarded £428,141 by Big Lottery, to support 'Silver Surfers': 26 May 2009

Social Firm, MillRace IT, is among several partners in the “Essex UnITe” project that has been awarded a grant of £428,141 by Big Lottery’s “Reaching Communities” programme. Essex UnITe aims to introduce computers and the internet to older people across Essex through community workshops, and to deliver training to people in supported and sheltered accommodation.

The Essex UnITe partners are MillRace IT, Age UK, Age Concern Essex, Essex County Council, Genesis Housing and Chelmer Housing Partnership. The lottery grant will fund: • community workshops and roadshows across the County for over 8000 older people; • IT skills training and broadband access at 35 sheltered/supported housing schemes • development of community and social networking websites and virtual village halls for older people.

Minister to officially open Wholefood Planet Norwich CIC (18 March 2009)

Wholefood Planet, a new wholefood shop in Norwich, is going to be officially opened by Kevin Brennan, Minister for the Third Sector, on 18th March 2009. The store is registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) and it is set up as a Social Firm which will create good quality paid work for people with learning disabilities from Norwich.

The novel approach of Wholefood Planet is what has attracted the Minister’s interest, and that of the entire third sector. It is the first Social Firm retail outlet in Norwich, it is the first Wholefood Planet store to open in the whole of the UK, it is the first joint venture between Norfolk County Council and Norwich City College to develop a Social Firm, it is the first social licensee to open in the whole of the UK as a Social Firm retail outlet and, in addition to everything else, it is promoting healthy eating and organic products within its local area and therefore meeting other social agendas.

New & different Wholefood Planet retail store opens in Norwich

Full member of Social Firms UK. Wholefood Planet, a new wholefood shop in Norwich, opened its doors to eager customers on Monday 26th January. At a time when much of the news from the retail sector is gloomy, this shop is different and brings positivity to the area. It is registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) and it is set up as a Social Firm* which, in this case, will create good quality paid work for people with learning disabilities from Norwich.
