What progress has the Social Enterprise Unit made on its “strategy for success” and how this will benefit social firms? Catherine Macleod from the DTI’s Social Enterprise Unit will outline the current situation.

The Social Enterprise CoalitionJonathan Bland
Jonathan Bland of the Social Enterprise Coalition will outline the SEC programme of creating a strong and united voice for social enterprise, including opportunities for involvement of Social Firms UK members.

WORKSHOPS – Choice for delegates of one workshop

Duffield Room
Workshop 1:
Regional Social Enterprise Networks & Regional Social Firm Networks

Are there too many networks? too much competition? too much politics? Or is this a position of strength to build social enterprises and social firms? The workshop will examine different regional strategies and their impact on social firms development and regional networks.

Guy Turnbull from Economic Partnerships, Mark Powell from IMBY and Evan Rees from Social Enterprise East Midlands will outline experiences and draw out views from delegates on these issues.

Sunley Room:
Workshop 2: Social Accounting
What is social accounting? What methods might work for social firms? What benefits might it bring to your enterprise? Some results from the pilot project using “Balanced Scorecard” with Social Firms UK members will be analysed and discussed

Hetan Shah from New Economics Foundation and project leader of the EQUAL Social Enterprise Partnership group on Quality and Impact will present social accounting and draw out the views of delegates regarding its potential usefulness for the sector.

Willow Room:
Workshop 3: Procurement
Are there opportunities for social firms and emerging social firms to sell products and services to public authorities and government? How will the DTI’s Social Enterprise Procurement Toolkit help in this process?

Ali Somers of the London Social Economy Taskforce and Social Enterprise London, together with Gerry Higgins of Social Firms UK, will present the work done to date on this area and facilitate discussion of delegates on this increasingly dominant topic.

Cedar Room:
Workshop 4: Access to Finance
Are CDFI’s (Community Development Finance Initiatives) and other finance providers meeting the needs of the social firm sector? The workshop will provision and those that need it the opportunity to discuss issues of access and identify potential solutions. Practitioners from the sector will give brief presentations on how they accessed finance to develop their social firms with a view to discussing alternatives to the traditional grant route.

Andrew Hibbert from ICOF will facilitate this workshop. John Morley from Wood ‘n Stuff (an emerging social firm in Eastern Region) will give a short presentations outlining his experience.

Andrew Robinson Head of Community Development Banking at NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland Community Development Banking outlines the need for the social firm sector to develop

Duffield Room:
Workshop 1: Benefits (Mind The Gap)
A comprehensive review of social security benefits issues, based on the ‘Mind The Gap’ research carried out by Social Firms Scotland and Forth Sector.

Kevin Robbie from Forth Sector and Leona McDermid from Social Firms Scotland will present the research and facilitate the discussion on this topic, there might be some ‘blue sky’ thinking required!

Sunley Room:
Workshop 2: Externalisation – are there are social firm successes?
After a number of attempts at externalising public authority enterprises into independent social firms, some successes can be reported. The practitioners involved relay their experiences and discuss the key ingredients for successful externalisation.

Sally Reynolds of Social Firms UK will facilitate this workshop with contribution from Dean Bash at Waterloo Woodwork

Workshop 3: Social Firm Case Studies
Exploring the possibilities and potential for the social firm sector. The workshop will look at suitable business models and discuss support available for Social Firms UK members.

Gerry Higgins of Social Firms UK will facilitate this workshop with contribution from Michael Way of Franchise Your Business Ltd.

Business Support for Social Firms – moving on!
Gerry Higgins, Social Firms UK, and Jane Sidaway, Evaluator of the 2003 Phoenix Development Fund Project.

Gerry and Jane outline the results of the 3 year business support programme for the social firm sector and introduce the rationale and content of the new business support programme for 2004/5.
