This workshop will review the aims of EQUAL and look at some examples and how the sector can gain from their work [Download] Workshop 2 - Blue Sky On Welfare Reform Leona McDermid; Sheila Durie How are we going to get one million Incapacity Benefit claimants into work over 10 years? You’re invited to think as radically as you can in this facilitated workshop. Workshop 3 - Supportive Businesses, Supported Employment And Social Firms David Whyte; Kathy Baker; Pegs Bailey This workshop debates what constitutes ‘good supportive employment’, how this can be safeguarded within the tensions of running a business and the potential of benchmarking against good practice. [Download] [Workshop Notes] Workshop 4 - Opening Up Opportunities For Private Finance With The CIC Abbie Rumbold Abbie Rumbold from Bates Wells & Braithwaite outlines some of the exciting combined finance opportunities that the new Community Interest Company (CIC) presents to the social enterprise and Social Firm sectors. Delegates will work on key points for a factsheet for sharing within the sector. This workshop is being designed for those with no or minimal knowledge about the CIC structure. The emergence of contract opportunities that are larger than any individual provider offers a particular challenge for partnership/collaborative working otherwise known as ‘clustering’. It’s an approach that’s used extensively in the private sector - can it work in the social enterprise sector? This workshop will explore the pros and cons of partnership working and clustering and provide a model of how to do it.This workshop will be led by Graham Beaumont and Alan Cornfield from ISE who have been working on these concepts funded by Change Up. Sarah Crawley What skills do you need on a board that’s going to oversee the development of a Social Firm or social enterprise business? What are the legal responsibilities of directors/trustees and how can these be balanced with the need to develop the business and taking risks? This workshop will help you develop an approach that can be applied straight away. There is increasing talk about franchising and replication options in the social enterprise sector. This is a fun workshop that provides insight into the types of assessment you and/or your organisation would experience when considering taking on a franchise or licence/replication. Alastair Irvine Action for Blind People is starting 5 micro enterprises that will exclusively employ blind and partially sighted people, as part of its VISAGE project. Alastair Irvine from the charity’s new business incubator outlines the reasons why the charity has embarked on this task and invites thoughts from delegates on the sorts of issues and challenges the board of trustees and officers have to consider now and in the future regarding new Social Firm development. 5.30pm End Of Workshops

Workshop i - Procurement Opportunities Julie Bremner; Nicholas Campbell-Watts Can opportunities in the delivery of public services be increased as a result of Article 19 from the EU Procurement Directive (reserved contracts for sheltered workshops) or other initiatives? A representative from the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and an emerging Social Firm that already contracts with an NHS Trust debate the interpretation of this directive with the aim of clarifying this point. [Download] [Workshop Notes] Workshop ii - Strengthening Business Through Diversity Rhiannon Suter The Employers Forum on Disability presents its work, discusses the link to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and invites debate on how more can be done in the private sector to employ disabled people. Judy Scott; Dr Martin Hill What are the known benefits of working - not just in Social Firms but in any company? What are the main concerns of disabled people in taking a job? How can these help to be alleviated? This workshop offers a chance to discuss and debate these points for the customers of employment service providers. A panel of grant, loan and private financiers will answer the questions you might have arising from Guy Turnbull’s presentation about start-up finance options. This workshop explores some of the findings from recent Phoenix-funded projects on mental health and self employment and discusses how this option might be approached within future services. Impressions Restaurants in Kent, developed by Focus To Work, and Café Nova Interchange (which has developed the licence of Café Ciao) discuss the attractions of catering, why these can sometimes prove fatal, and how mistakes can be avoided. It is important that a robust evidence base is created to demonstrate the value of Social Firms and the Small Business Service is supportive of this work.
